In the frenzy of the holiday season, wrapping presents always seems to be one of the last tasks we finish. Does this feel familiar?
And while the bows and paper certainly add to the joy and fun of opening gifts, this part of the season isn’t always the most sustainable.
That’s why we’ve put together this simple list of 4 easy tricks you can use to make your gift-giving more eco-friendly this year:
One of the most helpful things we’ve started to do throughout the year is save boxes, tissue paper, and gift wrapping from online orders and presents we receive to use again at the holidays.
Feel a little less guilty about all of those Amazon boxes you accrue by using them as the gift boxes or for shipping if you’re mailing gifts to your friends and relatives. The same goes for gift bags and tissue paper too: just fold and pack them down to store away. And they’ll be ready to go when you need them!
If you enjoy crafting throughout the year, why not use some of the fabrics and other cloth materials from your projects as a wrapping solution for your gifts?
Add some fun and flair to the occasion with patterns to match the gift recipient’s personality or the spirit of the holiday!
If you do have to buy new packaging and wrapping material, it’s best to look for natural, uncoated kraft paper. This can also apply to gift boxes and bags you’re purchasing as well.
Did you know that gift packaging coated in film can’t be recycled due to the plastics in the film? Same goes for any tape that’s left on the paper.
Talk about a bummer! Avoid this all going to waste by using paper and packaging that can be easily recycled. And by removing tape before you toss everything out.
Once you have your packages all nicely wrapped, have some fun with it by adding some festive decorations.
The most sustainable options are always the ones you have laying around your house or maybe even in your backyard.
We love adding natural options that reflect the season:
For winter, pine sprigs, pinecones, and rosemary are our go-tos. And if you’re looking to add a pop of color, grab some berries or dried fruit to finish off the look!
Of course with all of it, have fun! There’s certainly nothing better than bringing joy to another through a thoughtful gift and sustainable packaging only enhances it!
